It is important to identify at an early stage the opportunities and risks of innovation, as well as new business segments and markets, if innovations in the fields of material efficiency and resource conservation are to succeed. Work Package 9 will organise a process of dialogue with representatives from industry, business, consumer organisations and research institutes. Within this framework, we aim to develop "integrated technology roadmaps" for relevant lead markets for resource efficiency.
These roadmaps serve to draw together different individual issues, helping us to identify possible courses of action and listing priorities. Taking the current state of technological development as their starting-point, roadmaps provide information on the type, pace and direction of possible technological developments within the context of company and business sector innovation and action.
Work Package 9 aims to:
Elaborate and develop the German Environment Ministry's concept of environmentally benign industrial policy, particularly its material and energy efficiency campaign and the strategy of using sector-based roadmap processes to open up future green markets.
Identify technology, standardisation and research needs, as well as qualification requirements, user requirements and the structural conditions for the development of particularly relevant future markets for resource efficiency.
Pool specific competencies and expertise from research institutes, business, associations and various groups in society. As small and medium-sized businesses in particular are rarely able to achieve this on their own, this practical step is designed to give them direct access to interdisciplinary knowledge and specific expertise.
Promote awareness among industry associations and professional organisations of their potential role and involve them as a platform for the development of co-ordinated innovation roadmaps to promote resource efficiency and as a channel of communication allowing our results to feed into innovative management within companies (pilot projects).
Demonstrate the opportunities and strategies for creating and expanding export markets for efficiency technologies and identify pilot projects for German companies within key future markets for efficiency technologies.
Seek to promote links between the roadmap and actual innovation policy and innovation management within companies in order to expand resource efficiency potential.
Given the nature of the task, we have decided to use the integrated technology roadmap concept developed and tested by the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment (IZT). Working together with industry and industry associations, two sector-specific roadmaps will be developed within the framework of the project in a multi-stage process, focusing on selected lead markets for resource efficiency.
