Aims and Projected Results
1. Environmentally relevant ores: Augment basic knowledge about, in particular, metallic ores used in information and communications technology; develop strategies and measures to avoid their usage, identify substitutes, ensure energy-efficient production and close the materials cycle (incl. international aspects).
2. Worldwide retrieval of PGM (platinum group metals): Survey the export routes and high-loss areas of PGM use and derive strategies for the avoidance and substitution of these metals, as well as improving the international management of their circulation.
3. Infrastructures: Ascertain the material resources in use, the annual expansion or shrinkage in volume of transport networks, drinking water and waste water systems, telecommunications and IT-communications networks, as well as electricity, gas and local heating networks in Germany, in addition to the relevant expenditure on materials and the consumption of energy in these areas.
In line with these aims, this work package consists of three sub-packages, each comprising three key steps:
Environmentally relevant ores: - Screening for potentially problematic metals,
- In-depth study of selected, potentially critical metals,
- Identification of strategies and measures for their avoidance, substitution, resource-efficient production and the closing of the materials cycle, as well as political recommendations at national, EU and international levels.
Worldwide retrieval of PGM: - Identification of potentially problematic export flows and significant PGM losses, plus an analysis of the key players in the field,
- In-depth study of selected export flows and areas of use,
- Identification of appropriate strategies and measures.
Infrastructures: - Identification of relevant types of infrastructure / reference systems,
- Determination of the volume of current infrastructures and of the resources present in the reference systems,
- Determination of the annual material and energy flows within the reference systems,
- Relevance analysis and conclusions.
